Norman Igloopialik
Norman Igloopialik is a renowned Inuk illustrator hailing from the small community of Arviat in Nunavut, 255 kms north of Churchill, Manitoba.
The community of Arviat is located at N61 07’ W94 04’ in Nunavut’s Kivalliq Region, approximately 210 km south of Rankin Inlet, 1400 km southwest of Iqaluit, 1260 km north of Winnipeg and only 255 km north of Churchill, Manitoba. It is the southernmost mainland community in Nunavut, with only the island community of Sanikiluaq further south in the territory. It has a population of 3,170.
With over three decades of experience in the art world, Igloopialik has made significant contributions to the representation of Inuit culture through his illustrations.
His distinctive style and poignant themes have garnered international acclaim, allowing his artwork to resonate beyond traditional audiences.
Igloopialik served as an illustrator for Inuktitut Magazine, a publication dedicated to promoting the use of the Inuktitut language and showcasing Inuit art and culture.
Currently he resides in Ottawa, where he continues to create and share his art. His impressive body of work is not only celebrated in Canada but is also part of the collection at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, a testament to his impact on the art community and the importance of Inuit representation in contemporary art.
In addition to his visual art, he is also a musician, further expressing his creativity and cultural identity through music.
