Surface Designs Using Gelatin Plates

Objective:  Learn the fundamentals and potential of making prints using a gelatin plate. Learn tips & tricks of creative gelli plate design on various papers using acrylic paints and other mediums, stencils, found objects, and mark-making tools. Together we will build layers on our prints and experiment with the materials. Great for backgrounds, art journals, arts cards, collage and more. Great for beginners or just to get reacquainted with your gel plate. Bring your own gelatin plate (any size) and a soft rubber brayer, plus any acrylics and papers you may have.

Materials:

  • Table covering
  • Gelli plate or Gel Press Plate (not speedball brand) any size
  • Brayer
  • Any acrylic paints you may have
  • Watercolour paints if you have them (optional)
  • Paint brushes (perhaps ½ or 1” if you have any)
  • Paper towels
  • 2-3 feet of waxed paper or parchment paper
  • Baby wipes (great for cleaning the gel plate)

Surfaces to print on:

  • Variety of plain papers – photocopy paper, art papers, paper bags, tissue paper, old sewing patterns, old book paper
  • Can try canvas, decorative papers, matboard, rice papers, deli paper,  black paper if you have some

Tools for mark making, for example: 

  • Bubble wrap
  • Stencils
  • String
  • Q-tips
  • plastic glasses
  • corks
  • corrugated cardboard
  • sponges
  • saran wrap
  • NO METAL – AS THIS WILL MARK THE GEL PLATE

Duration of the course: 1 day,  10 am – 4 pm.
